About us

At Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), we believe in the ability of Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths to effect positive change in the world and drive a sustainable international economy. SFI is the national foundation for investment in scientific and engineering research. SFI invests in academic researchers and research teams by maintaining a balanced portfolio of early and advanced research, frontiers/discovery and applied research projects that are led by individuals, small groups and large-scale research centres in order to generate new knowledge, leading-edge technologies and competitive enterprises in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Through this funding we are ensuring that Ireland has the skills, ideas and technologies that we need to address societal challenges and become a true global knowledge economy. SFI also promotes and supports public awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society and the economy, through many public engagement programmes that span the full breadth of the education system and include all members of the public. SFI is also ensuring a pipeline of talent in areas of future growth through innovative PhD programmes at our Research Centres, Centres for Research Training and Centres for Doctoral Training. SFI collaborates closely with both national and International funders to expand opportunities of strategic importance for Ireland.

What employees say

"Joining Science Foundation Ireland through their Fellowship Programme gave me a wonderful opportunity to experience the diversity of activities carried out by a funding agency while also developing professionally and personally. Even since my earliest days at SFI, I have always felt that my opinion was valued and respected and I have been encouraged to bring new ideas to the table. The work may be challenging but problems are always tackled as a team. There is a great culture of collaboration and I’ve had the chance to work with many teams across the organisation. I’m grateful to work with colleagues who genuinely care about what they do and who are committed to supporting researchers, innovation and ultimately making a difference for our society."

What inspires us

We fund research that makes a real difference to Irish society and the economy now and into the future. Staff at SFI are proud of what we do. We are inspired by the ground-breaking science that we fund and the impacts that it has on society at large.

Each member of staff at SFI plays an important role within this function and is valued for what they bring. We inspire and support each other on a daily basis as we adapt to change and stretch to seize opportunities to support Ireland to be a global leader in this space.

We work closely with those we fund to tell their stories, celebrate their work and engage the public in the work that we do. This year more than ever, Science has come to the fore in terms of providing answers to solve the global crises we face. Science Week, our flagship public event reaches over 2 million people annually and is a nationwide, weeklong celebration of the endless possibilities that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths provide.
