About us

Alcon Inc. is the global leader in eye care, dedicated to helping people see brilliantly.

With our 70-plus-year heritage, we are the largest eye care device company in the world – with complementary businesses in Surgical and Vision Care. Being a truly global company, we work in over 70 countries and serve patients in more than 140 countries.

We have a long history of industry firsts, and each year we commit a substantial amount in Research and Development to meet customer needs and patient demands. Today Alcon operates in seventy-four countries, serving patients in over 140 countries, employing over 20,000 associates worldwide.

The Cork facility was established in 1991.  In 2006, the Cork plant began manufacturing Alcon’s intraocular lenses (IOLs), which replace the eye’s natural lens in cataract surgery. Alcon’s Clareon / AcrySof® IOLs are the most frequently implanted lenses worldwide.

Alcon’s Cork facility is 13,657 square meters in size and employs over 700 associates. In an environment where quality and precision are critical, Alcon employs professionals with the skills and passion to meet the expectations of our customers, as well as the regulatory bodies that govern the development and manufacturing of our eye care products.

Patients are at the center of everything we do and at the heart of our commitment to quality. The Alcon facility in Cork is certified to ISO 13485, is MDD compliant and is an FDA approved manufacturing site.

What employees say

As an international organization, Alcon has a global RADAR program to identify key talent and provide rotational assignments that will prepare participants for senior leadership positions. One Cork based associate who was successful in sustaining a placement on the program and is now based in Singapore has this to say: “I heard about RADAR as an opportunity to travel and develop internally within Alcon. I found out more about it, talked to my wife, and well, the rest is history. I am currently living in a country which I never would have gone to and performing a role which I did not think I would ever do. This is an amazing experience for both myself as an Alcon associate and for my family. The role has exposed me to new cultures, new ways of working and thinking. I have become more agile, more adaptive, and more knowledgeable due to receiving exposure to all sides of the business. I am grateful to Alcon for hosting this program and giving me the opportunity to avail of this."

What defines us

Founded in 1945 two pharmacists, Robert Alexander and William Connor opened a small pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas, combining the first syllables of their last names to call it Alcon.

Built on three Foundational Principles and these principles still ring through today.

The Customer: ‘Our approach is medical specialist-oriented, in that we concentrate our efforts on seeing the needs of our patients through the eyes of the specialists who are treating them. We let the specialist tell us what he (or she) needs to treat patients’

Innovation: Technology is (of) primary importance to Alcon…Its distinction has resulted from focusing that technology on what the market identifies as better’ William Conner

Our People: ‘We recognized from the start that people can make the difference between success and failure and we have attempted always to foster an atmosphere that motivates and encourages these outstanding individuals to remain in our organization’ Robert Alexander
