About us
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is the regulator for the professions of nursing and midwifery in Ireland. We have a statutory obligation to protect the public and the integrity of the practice of the professions of nursing and midwifery.
NMBI performs its functions in the public interest under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011, as amended.
NMBI’s vision is to provide leadership to registered nurses and midwives to deliver safe care through innovative and proactive professional regulation. This mission is to protect the public and the integrity of the professions of nursing and midwifery through the promotion of high standards of education, training and professional conduct.
NMBI works to ensure that we operate in line with best practice in all areas of our work. NMBI welcomes opportunities to hear from nurses, midwives, the public and others on any aspect of our work.
As the regulator for the professions of nursing and midwifery and in fulfilling our mission, we:
- maintain the Register of Nurses and Midwives and a Candidate Register for student nurses and midwives
- set the standards for the education of nurses and midwives
- approve programmes of education necessary for registration and monitor these programmes on an ongoing basis
- support our registrants by providing appropriate guidance on professional conduct and ethics for both registered nurses and midwives
- investigate and consider complaints against nurses and midwives.
